Arbitrator Training: Advanced Level


New for 2011, the ICA Advanced Level Training has been introduced to ensure that ICA Arbitrators are trained to the highest possible standard.


who is the training for?

The training is for ICA Individual Members who have passed the Basic Level 1 examination and who want to improve and develop their arbitration knowledge and skills.

what is included in the training?

The training provides an in-depth study of the principles of English law relating to the Arbitration and the Sale of Goods Acts. It presents participants with direct comparisons and applications to the ICA Bylaws & Rules and the opportunity to practice reasoning an Award.

There are three modules:

  • Module 1: Focuses on the Arbitration Act 1996 and its application to the cotton market with a multiple choice examination (similar to the Basic Level 1).

  • Module 2: Focuses on contract law and the Sales of Goods Act 1979 with a multiple choice examination (similar to the Basic Level 1).

  • Module 3: This is more intensive and it will require you to provide a written, reasoned response to issues raised within the arbitration.


what is the cost?

For a limited introductory period, we will only charge you an administration fee of GBP £75 (or the equivalent US$ rate).  From 1 April 2012 the fees will increase to GBP £100 for Modules 1 & 2 (combined cost) and GBP £300 for Module 3.


how can you apply?

To apply, you must be an ICA Individual Member and have already successfully completed the Basic Level 1 exam. All applications will be handled by the ICA team, who will supply you with your course material and schedule your exam(s).

how can you become an ICA Arbitrator?

  • You must successfully complete the Basic Level 1 course/exam

  • You must be elected as an ICA Individual Member

  • You must have at least five years' experience in the cotton trade (exceptions will be made depending on your level of experience and competency)

  • And, from 1 April 2013, you must successfully complete Modules 1, 2 & 3 of the Advanced Level
